Hi ! I’m Nathan Gilson, I’m a linocut artist and I live in Brussels.Where do you find your inspiration?
I am obsessed by the illusion of happiness since I was a child. I’m trying to understand how youth is now trying to be satisfied in the 21 century. It’s hard to explain, but I always wonder if we really take pleasure to parties or if we’re just enjoying it because everyone seems to enjoy it. I mean, I often go in clubs and I love dancing but sometimes music is very bad, there’s no sphere but you keep moving. Yes yes, I’m sure that you know what I mean ! It’s like we were trying to make each night the most incredible of our life and sometimes it’s not, then we’re just acting it to pretend that it was. Now the aim is not to have fun, but to look like if we were having fun. Everybody is now so lost, we’re trying to get sense by following the common rules of pleasure. I don’t mean that all of this is new but it’s getting crazy.
I think that real satisfaction is about love, friends and doing what we love to do. Now you’re satisfied when everybody think that you’re satisfied, this is what I call the illusion of happiness.
Maybe you’d ask yourself why I’m talking about this stuff, I’m not really talking about my prints right now… But let me explain, what I show is the reflect of what I see, I’m appearing disgusting on my pictures to look like the people that disgusts me everyday.
Okay, I know that all of this could look a bit strange to you… But it made me so fucking paranoid, so I created my own world, where I feel out of all this shit. And I called it “Little Vegas”, where I’m dreaming about cowboys, rodeos and nature. It’s full of palms, american flags and cowboy stuffs. It’s the way I’m feeling good and then, I’m printing it.Who are some of your favorite artists?
I like artists as Wim Delvoye, Naomi Harris ( America Swing ) and Terry Richardson.Any favorite medium of art?
Not really.What’s your favorite food?
Oh I love cheeseburgers ! But not from fastfoods, that’s fucking plastic.When did you start creating?
I started to print when I bought myself a proof press, two years ago.What is your favorite piece of art that you’ve created?
I think that it’s #17 “My Dick Is Bigger Than Yours”. It’s the obsession of pride.Any new projects coming up?
Sure, the end of the world ! Maybe it’s happening this friday evening ! No I’m just kidding. Bad music, advertising everywhere, the end of the world is happening right now.Where do you hope to be in the next two years?
Still in Little Vegas, but it’s gonna be huge and there will only be friends of mine in there. Like a kind of Disneyland. We would feel so good within and we would never get out of this.What is your favorite book? Movie? Quote?
I didn’t read any book since secondary school, I’d like to read again but I don’t have too much time. About the movie, I love so much “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly”, this is an amazing western. And my favorite quote : “Success is having to worry about every damn thing in the world, except money.” Johnny cash.
